What Is Homeopathy?
- Homeopathy is a therapy based on
the theory of treating like with like.
- If a patient comes with a headache
of a
particular type, we would use a small dose of an agent known to cause a
similar type of headache. So the two cancel out.
Homeopathic Medicines
- Homoeopaths treat a
patient’s
symptoms by giving a highly diluted form of a substance. They are
derived from plants, animals and minerals.
- The substances are prepared using
strict guidelines under the control of the Therapeutic Goods
Administration (TGA).
How does homeopathy work?
- Homoeopathy aims to keep healthy
people well by ensuring their immune system is as strong as possible.
- Homeopathic treatment is believed
to work by stimulating the body’s ability to fight
infection.
What conditions can be treated?
- Homeopathy treats each person as a
unique individual.
- For example, coughs in different
patients would require a different medicine.
- Digestive complaints would require
an individual medicine.
Conditions Treated
- Acute conditions such as earache,
colds hayfever, travel sickness, colic, teething and food poisoning.
- Chronic conditions such as asthma,
eczema, depression, anxiety, digestive complaints, menopausal and PMS
symptoms
- First Aid conditions such as
injury, trauma, stings,bites, after surgery.
- For example following a bee sting
using homeopathic Apis will quickly alleviate the painful swelling.
- Following surgery the use of
homeopathic Arnica will reduce bruising and shock.
What to Expect From Treatment.
- The first consultation lasts about
an
hour and your homeopath will take a detailed case history. Current
symptoms and past medical history will be noted
- Questions may be asked about diet,
sleep, lifestyle, and about some mental and emotional aspects
- Questions may also be asked about
family history.
What to Expect From Treatment continued
- The prescribed homeopathic medicine
will match the individual symptoms of the patient to the medicine.
- The chosen medicine will match the
individual not the condition so two people with asthma may require
different medicines.
What medicine will I receive?
- A single dose or repeated doses of
medicine may be given. These small amounts of medicine are sufficient
to stimulate the body's healing process.
- Where illness has developed over a
long
time, several successive medicines may be needed during the course of
weeks, months or years.
How do I take the medicines?
- Homeopathic medicines are taken in
liquid or pill form.
- They need to be taken away from
food or
strong flavours such as mint or coffee as they may limit the
effectiveness of the medicine.
- Your homeopath will explain how
often the medicine should be taken.
Are there side effects?
- Healing takes place in different
ways and
reactions to a medicine vary. Sometimes there is an immediate
improvement. Sometimes healing begins with an increased feeling of well
being, even though symptoms initially remain. In some cases, old
symptoms recur as part of the healing process. Occasionally there is a
temporary worsening of the symptoms prior to improvement.
Are homeopathic medicines safe?
- Homeopathy is safe for all ages
from newborns through to the elderly.
- Babies and children respond
extremely well to homeopathy.
- Government regulators do not allow
the
use toxic substances. This is regulated under the Poisons Act and is
administered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
How wide spread is its use?
- In the UK, the royal family has
used homeopathy since 1830 and it has a wide acceptance throughout
Europe.
- Homeopathy is used throughout the
developed world. According to the WHO, 30 million Europeans use
Homeopathy.
- In France, the most popular cold
and flu remedy is a homeopathic medicine available here at Botanica
Medicines
- Homoeopathy is also used
extensively in the developing world, due to its easy access, cost
effectiveness and low risk profile.
